Pre-registered a while ago. I should be there running Azenis on steelies. There's still a few things I need to purchase prior to the event.

As an aside, can anyone recommend a good digital tire pressure gauge that I can buy locally? The battery died on my old Accutire gauge, and I guess it needs to be recalibrated after replacing the battery or something.

EDIT: BTW, the event is on the 29th. :P

I'll be at the Auto-x Sunday, no test and tune because it's D-Day at U of R. I'll be in the black SRT-4, 13NSM, I want to crack the top 5 in novice, but we'll see, it's only going to be my 3rd event.

for bracciA4...

My post count isn't high enough for links yet, but there's a Quick Start Guide on our web site flr-scca dot com. It's an older version, but the updated one will be there in the next day or two. (thanks MXS). Silver also had an awesome thread on here under the "Intro to Autocross dinner" thread.

Basically, get there as early as possible. Registration is open from 8am to 9:30am, but I would say that you should really be there by 8:30 so you can get comfortable with the environment without rushing.

Come to the "Novice Tent" which is a pop up canopy with "Novice" on the side, and we'll get you started on your day.

We're planning that for the Test & Tune on Saturday. Will you be there? Jake and I tested all the equipment Monday night. Everything seems to be in good working order so far as we can tell. Other than that, nothing has really changed from last year.

As listed in the 2007 Supps (which are finally posted)...

"If the driver or passenger is in the Novice Class, then the other occupant in the car must be a registered instructor."

This allows for Novices to ride along with Instructors. We'll be easy to find, and are friendly and usually don't mind taking passengers. My policy is that I'll take passengers for the first three runs, but not on the last one or two when the event is on the line.

I've got a little bit of mixed feelings about Novice ride alongs. On one hand, it's a great experience. On the other hand, it can be a little overwhelming. You have to be very careful that the Novice understand that they are not up to your level of preparation. I had a Novice almost put his WRX into the fence at BIMP after riding with me and trying to use my braking point at the end of the long straight.

Being under powered is great no throttle management needed. The pedal is either on the floor or... well there isn't really another useful choice.

Try it with 50 crank hp - 1979 Fiat 128 hatch. At least it made it harder to overcome the massive 145/SR80-13 tires.

Hopefully we can get more of them to stick this year. Any ideas or suggestions...

Here's one: suggest / let / request that Novices "throw away" their first run.

The "old" school of thought was make 'em walk the course, maybe even several times. Perhaps it's a throwback to the days of us being lucky to get 3 runs in before dusk. But I can say this, I learned SOOO much more having the first couple laps at Lime Rock and NHIS be full course yellow, just being told the line of the track and not worrying at ALL about speed. (still walk it, but don't ONLY walk it to learn - an instructor telling you "you want to be left here" or "brake later there" etc is invaluable).

Sure, a Novice could chose to do this on their own, but lets be honest - we all get out there and want to be "Fast" - and it takes time to realize that, yes, your instructor is right, there's truth to "slow is fast - so rather than people get frustrated, lost, DNF, etc - suggest to them they reeeeealy take it easy the first run.

Then again, you might already be doing this, as I haven't been a Novice for several years. Just my $.02 :)

Silver
04-27-2007, 12:35 PM
Last year my instructors always stressed to "go slow" on my first run to do just that... figure out the course, find the line, etc. I'm pretty sure it's something that is stressed to other/all novices as well.

^^ definitely a good idea. Yeah sure the instructors tell you to go slow but they don't really stress it? I guess maybe saying "don't go fast or you'll get a slap on the wrist" would be better :p

I still gotta remember to get to the ATM so I have cash on hand to go to this haha.

Silver
04-27-2007, 02:23 PM
So now instructors should be officers to keep your speed in check? That's just silly and unfair to novices.

It's your own ass if you don't listen to the advice the instructors are giving you (which includes "throwing away" your first run in favor of figuring out the course). Don't bother to do it, and you'll probably end up getting DNF's all day, or running way slower than you could have potentially run.

Just wanted to throw something out as a point of clarification...

It may seem odd, but the number one job of the Novice Program in general, and the Instructors in particular is not to instruct, but to try to get people thru their first events safely.

However, we will be classifying Novices as level1 for first timers, and level2 once they have demonstrated that they can safely navigate. We will do a little more "instructing" for the level2 Novices.

Another thing that we will be watching for this year is the balance between the size and success of the Novice program relative to the overall event. On one hand, the Novice program is an "event within the event". On the other hand, the overall goal of the program is to graduate drivers into the open classes. This topic will be open for discussion as the season progresses. I will listening for input from the Novices as well as the general community.

I thought about starting the event with a "Novice Parade", but couldn't push it thru logistically.

I'll be at the Test & Tune tomorrow (white EVO). I'd love to hear any thoughts you may have about the Novice program.

I finally remembered to get my scca membership a couple hours ago.

Do you need just the member number or the card for registration?

Is 11 the usual time to get there? The schedule says that's when registration starts.

I gotta go over my pretty long check list in the morning but I'm up early so I'll have plenty of time.

Oh and don't feel bad about the "ricer BOV".. I was the one there with the HKS SSQV that could probably be heard for miles and miles.. and that's with the purple "low-tone" insert installed.

no. the weather turned me off to taking pictures. The only picture I got was this morning when I was putting my interior back in (the trunk was fully stripped) and I noticed that a bird shat right on my HKS SSQV... stupid vented hood haha.

I drove by the test-and-tune today... saw Moffit lining up in the Z and Marnie driving the Civic on 3 wheels. Wish the weather was better, I would have watched a little more.

BTW, everybody ready for tomorrow?

Kansei
04-28-2007, 07:38 PM
I was ready for today so I can't be any more ready for tomorrow... though if I had the cash and time, I'd overnight an LSD and beefier front sway bar and have them installed for tomorrow :P my car oversteered like a bitch, even when it was kinda dry. My tire pressure was kinda low (I forgot to check it before the event.. 34 on one front, 31 on the other three), but I think it might have been more an issue of the tires not liking the cold. Either way, I should get the racing beat bar that pairs with my racing beat rear, they weren't designed to be used separately. Until I get an LSD I'll just need to learn a little thing called throttle modulation that I never had to deal with before haha.

Good luck with that LSD thing... I've got three diffs, and I'm still dealing with some corner exit wheel spin.

For those that didn't stick around for the setup - make sure and make it out early enough for a couple of extra course walks in the morning. The course is going to me a tester. There's lots of places to hang yourself if you aren't paying attention. (Let's be careful out there...)

Yeah I didn't get there early enough to do a course walk today :( It wasn't until my third set of runs that someone informed me that there was a slalom the first time you got to the far side of the lot :P

Your evo.. looked, sounded, and was driven amazingly! one wheel high off the ground on every single corner light clockwork, and totally smooth. I felt myself getting smoother as the day went on (only one autocross event under my belt before today) even though it was raining.

Problem is, when I get wheel spin (which happens in straight line too, not just corners), I've got nothin else.. no other wheels powering me to keep things moving haha.

This was my first event since relocating my sway bar chassis brackets farther out (factory design destroys bushings like crazy and causes a bad clunk).. it sure did stiffen it up quite a bit. Without the new brackets, the car felt a lot more balanced.

I had a great time today driving Moffitts Z. It was definitely a new experience racing a turbo car (hello boost...how are you doing...).

Then the rain set in and my times instantly got about, oh 4 seconds slower. Fastest time for me was a 48.something, about a second behind Dave. So I will -definitely- take that considering how good a driver he is.

George is ALWAYS amazing to watch... I cannot believe the way he throws that car around, and consistently too.

Just as a heads up, Dave and I will be meeting at Dunkin Donuts on East Ave to fill up on sugar and caffene at 7:30. We'll leave DD AT 7:45am SHARP, so if you don't see us there, then head down to RIT.

Ha, ya it does that with a cat, I just don't get the flames out the back. I had a good time, my best dry run was 48.7 and best wet was 49.8. Judging by that I think I could have gotten a high 47 second run had it stayed dry. Overall I was pretty happy, it was my 3rd auto-x/test and tune, I'm definitely looking forward to tomorrow, just not going to like the waiting around.

intercooler piping (middle of winter turbo install ftw!).. well what you see is probably the plastic "under the engine bay" shield/diffuser that can't really be bolted back to the chassis until I do some cutting of some non-structural metal and re-route the hot-side piping... so it's zip-tied right now 8)

I think what is worse than having a sunburn on my face is not having a sunburn where my sunglasses were.. I guess I've learned my lesson, sometimes the sun does in fact shine in Rochester. I've seriously never applied sunscreen in the three years I've been in Rochester :P

Just for the record... apply sunscreen at ANY autocross you do, sunny or otherwise. Standing out on parking lot while course working can be brutal.

I was given a great tip at one of my first autocrosses.... get into the habit of applying sunscreen during the drivers meeting. This way you get it done and out of the way, have something to do during the (sometimes) overly long meeting, and wont have to worry about getting it done while you are rushing to prep your car.

Edit: Oh yeah, and bring like 2 bottles if you come out to a Seneca event. Anyone who has been during a remotely sunny day can vouch for that. 8-O

I honestly barely notice a ride quality difference between those 205/40s and my snow wheels/tires (195/55/16). If my next set of tires is still on those wheels (those wheels and I have a love/hate relationship), they'll be 205/45 or maybe I'll roll my rear fenders and do 215/45.

Here's a little "Novices at the 1st event recap" that I sent out the Novices that I had emails for. There were a few significant Novices that I don't have email for including...

Ed J - STI
Aaron H - BMW 530
Frank M - Trans Am
Jenifer/Denise Same - Accord/Solara
Matt D - Beetle
Joanne P - Impreza
Mike D - SRT-4
Alex B - Taurus
Andy P - Impreza

Here's the recap...

Thanks for coming out to our first event of the season at R.I.T. It was a beautiful day with a challenging course layout. The turnout was very good, which made the event run a little slow with four runs rather than the usual five. There were 37 out of 124 total entrants in the Novice class.

The first place finisher in the Novice class was Edwin Jeffries in his A Stock STI. He was just a half of a tenth of a second ahead of Matt Dabski in the Beetle. Either one would have trophied in the open Road Tire class. Ed and Matt were 48 and 49 in overall pax, well into the top half of the overall entry field.

Mike Durkin in the Street Mod SRT-4 was 3rd in the Novice Class, and actually had the fastest raw time of the Novices by almost a second. He was also named as "The Most Exciting Novice Performance" for the event.

Aaron Happ (4th) - D Stock BMW 530, and Matt Tranter (6th) - STX Saturn Redline, win the "Mr Clean" Novice award for being at or near the top of the Novice class while having all runs without penalties.

Kevin Kaschube (5th) in the A Stock BMW Z4 gets the "Most Improved" during the event award dropping several seconds as the day went forward.

The Novice Conekiller of the day goes to Phillip Lacy in the G Stock Olds Achieva with five total cones. Also noteworthy was Alex Bable in the interesting Street Mod Taurus. He hit four cones and didn't have a clean run. Yet even fighting a tough SM index in an unorthodox car for the class AND having a cone on his fastest run still managed to finish 13th overall, just out of the trophies. Had he missed that one cone, his 62.0 would have been the second fastest raw Novice time overall.
