I find that braking and downshifting works best for my style of driving. Also, it is helpful to match rev the engine when downshifting. The car seems much more predictable in its braking then and less likely to lock tires up if you have no ABS.

Yeah, I brake while downshifting and in between gears I blip the throttle (little heel toe action  ) to match the revs.

I don't trust my brakes, so I downshift first, then brake

I also try to match my Rpm with the gear I am shifting down into. Only works when not on the brake though...

Agreed, rev matching downshifts while braking seems to work best for me. To smooth things out even more [and I guess to give my left foot something to do] I'll usually double-clutch as I blip the throttle to ease the strain on the transmission a little more.

Last night I almost hit the saturn at the end of the race. Those of you who have driven a crx, you know how bad the torque steer is. I downshifted into 3rd at the end of the race with him right next to me, and almost went right into the side of his car. I tried using my brakes, but they just get really hot and mushy when you put them on lightly or hard at 100 mph. But yea, I usually use a combination of the 2. Braking after a race of after going really fast is always scarry for me. Atleast the brakes work on this one. :D
uuuughhh...wow, now i know not to drive next to you.

Change your brake fluid NOW. I went to a track day at pocono and was braking from 96 mph to 40 in a very controlled manner very quickly for 80 laps and only had fade once. If you're getting fade right after you're hitting them...something ain't working.

I realized that despite the fact that I read this thread I never posted in it..
I read a whole bunch on technique for slowing down back when I learned to drive. Most of the driving schools said that if you are not RACING and are just driving around town, to leave your car in the gear you are in when you begin to deaccelearte, then use the brakes, until your RPM's drop to below 1500, then simply throw it into neutral without the clutch, then finish braking while doing so.
this makes the most sense to me. You aren't using the clutch at ALL until you shift back into first.. and you aren't putting any wear on it therefore. Use your brakes to slow down... that's what they are there for.
So I: Slow down by letting off the gas.. hit the brakes, when my rpms become very low, I push the shifter into neutral without using the clutch, and come to a stop. When it's time to go, I shift into first.

Why use brakes? They just slow you down. Momentum driving is where its at.

at PCA events in MA and NH (autox's and drivers eds at NHIS) they recomended just brakes thats what there made for less wear on the drive train better for the car.......downshifting is fun tho. btw never set your e-brake after a hot run, your rotors will contract when cooling off and theres a posibility of warping them if the brake is left on. just passing on to you guys what was past on to me from some fast drivers.

I use my feat to slow down, since to car is power by pedals.

I use the toe-heel dbl clutch tech. It takes alittle getting used to but the only way with size 14 shoes
